Commercial Fixed Appliance Testing Northern Ireland
FAT Services for NI Businesses

Fixed Appliance
Testing.

Ensure the complete safety and regulatory compliance of your hard-wired electrical appliances, from hand dryers to industrial kitchen ovens, across Northern Ireland.

Protecting Assets

Essential Safety for
Fixed Appliances.

At CTS Electrical Services, we provide thorough Fixed Appliance Testing (FAT) to ensure the strict safety and legal compliance of your non-portable electrical assets. This includes everything from commercial hand dryers and water heaters to heavy-duty industrial kitchen ovens.

While standard PAT testing covers items with a plug, FAT testing covers equipment wired directly into a fused connection unit (fused spur). This essential testing efficiently identifies potential electrical faults, critical wear and tear or physical damage before it poses a severe operational risk.

Isolation Experts

Our engineers safely isolate complex hard-wired machinery without disrupting adjacent business operations.

Fully Vetted Engineers

All staff are Access NI cleared, enabling secure, uninterrupted testing in schools, care homes, and government facilities.

Digital Certification

We provide immediate digital certification and legally compliant logbook updates the moment testing concludes.

Our Framework

The FAT Testing Process

A specialized technical procedure designed to safely assess high-load equipment without compromising the integrity of your wider electrical grid.

1. Safe Isolation

Before any testing begins, the fixed appliance is safely isolated from the main power supply via its fused connection unit.

2. Formal Visual Inspection

We inspect the appliance casing, flex, and the fused spur itself for signs of thermal damage, wear, or water ingress.

3. Earth Continuity Test

Using calibrated equipment, we test the protective earth path to ensure any fault current will safely return to the ground.

4. Insulation Resistance

We apply a test voltage to verify the integrity of the internal wiring insulation, preventing hidden shock hazards.

5. Re-energise & Function Test

Power is safely restored and the appliance is functionally tested to ensure it operates exactly as intended by the manufacturer.

6. Certification & Labelling

A pass/fail label is securely attached to the appliance, and a detailed compliance certificate is generated via our portal.

Duty of Care

Don't Ignore Your
Hidden Hazards.

Many businesses mistakenly believe their annual PAT testing covers all their equipment. However, high-load machinery wired directly into the wall is often ignored, creating a massive blind spot in their health and safety compliance.

Commercial Kitchens: Essential for industrial cookers, dishwashers, and extractors that operate in high-heat, high-moisture environments.

Washrooms & Hygiene: Protects users by verifying the safety of hard-wired electric hand dryers and water heaters.

Insurance Validation: Provides the necessary proof that all electrical assets, not just plugged-in items, are safe.

Fixed Appliance FAQs

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) covers equipment that is connected to the mains supply via a standard plug and socket. Fixed Appliance Testing (FAT) covers equipment that is permanently wired directly into a fused connection unit (fused spur) or an isolator switch, such as hand dryers, large cookers, or storage heaters.
The frequency is determined by a risk assessment of the environment. In low-risk environments (like an office hand dryer), testing every 2-4 years may be sufficient. However, in high-risk environments like commercial kitchens or industrial workshops, hard-wired equipment should be tested annually alongside your PAT testing schedule.
No. This is a common misconception. An EICR (Fixed Wire Test) only tests the electrical installation of the building up to the point of the fused spur or isolator. It does not test the actual appliance connected to it. FAT testing is required to bridge this gap and ensure the appliance itself is safe.
